Adrian is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Washington State, a National Board of Certified Counselors Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor, and a Diplomat Clinical Mental Health Specialist (Trauma) through the American Mental Health Counselors Association. He previously served as President and Board Member of the Washington Mental Health Counselors Association and on the Washington State Governor’s Task Force on updating counselor legislation protecting clients and professionalizing counselor standards.
Adrian served for six years in the Royal Air Force and a further three years in the Royal Signals and works with a number of veterans and veterans’ families in Shelton and Mason county. Her main areas of focus include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, anger management, the grief process, parenting, and working with survivors of all forms of trauma including witnessing or experiencing trauma, abuse, moral injury, and traumas that occurred during military service. Outside of private practice, she worked as a therapist in a community-based, group practice setting for approximately four years. This experience included being designated by DSHS as a Domestic Violence Counselor Supervisor which involved treatment of perpetrators and survivors of Domestic Violence. During this experience, she worked collaboratively with clients that were court ordered for assessment and/or treatment, military veterans, reserve and active-duty military, and parents and children involved with the Department of Children, Youth, and Family (DCYF). She believes that therapy is a collaborative process and guides clients to increase self-awareness, gain new perspectives, decrease symptoms, and increase personal strengths to have a more meaningful life experience. She works to provide clients with tailored treatment plans that can be integrated into their daily lives. She served as a Staff Psychologist at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle for 25 years and on faculty with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington until 2015. She now focuses on her private practice as well as her consultation services to state and local agencies. Dr. David received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Washington in 1991, became licensed in Washington State in 1993, and is a highly-regarded and sought-after consultant and presenter both locally and internationally in the areas of PTSD, Military Sexual Trauma (MST), disability, and mental health. Her expertise includes Cognitive Behavioral and Evidence-based treatments for PTSD, depression, trauma, sleep disturbance, eating disorders, and interpersonal relationship skills. Compassionate and caring, she utilizes an integrative and holistic approach to treatment, maintaining a collaborative relationship in setting treatment goals while carefully listening to and responding to clients’ needs. Blind since age 8, Dr. David has published two books in the field of blindness which have received international acclaim. Her first book, Safe without Sight: Crime Prevention and Self Defense Strategies for People who are Blind (David, McCall, and Kolmar, 1998), serves as the foundation of personal safety curricula in schools and agencies for visually impaired individuals in the U.S. and Australia. It has also been adapted for female veterans with histories of sexual trauma and PTSD in a program of therapeutic self-defense called “Taking Charge!” Her second book, Sites Unseen: Traveling the World without Sight (David, 2010), promotes travel and serves as a resource guide to assist and encourage travel and tourism by individuals with visual impairments and other disabilities.
