Equipment Services Fleet Shop Assistant

Overview
Under the direction of the Statewide Shop Operations Manager, this position is responsible for
general lower level maintenance work, assisting technicians, and is expected to assist in field
servicecalls, repair and fabrication work, state surplus, motor pool and vehicle transportation.
As an internship within the Veterans Conservation Corps, the position will take part in field
based activities, giving the individual a minimum of 100 total hours over the internship
supporting non-shop related DNR programming and activities.
Hours and Compensation
This 6-month internship will require up to 40 hours per week and includes a stipend of
$2000/month to help cover living expenses.
This position will work 8-hour days, Monday through Friday, 6:30am to 3:00pm.
Essential Functions:
General Maintenance and Duties
 Assists technicians with basic repair work on vehicles
 Test drive vehicles to verify customer complaints and communicate to the technicians
 Assist technicians in diagnosis of faults
 Fabricates small parts under the guidance of the lead welder
 Welding, sanding, grinding
 Shop cleaning and tool organization
 Decommission surplus vehicles
Additional Internship requirements
 Participate in field work supporting maintenance and shop functions at:
 DNR Nursery
 Capitol Forest
 Enumclaw
 The DNR Seed Orchard
Operates equipment, power and hand tools in the accomplishment of daily tasks.
 Welders, hoists, overhead cranes.
 Hand tools, pneumatic tools, battery driven tools.
 Ability to implement the safe operation and use of all equipment and adheres to standard safety practices in accordance with state and federal guidelines, equipment owner’s manuals, and training provided by the agency (DNR).
Assists with Fleet Management.
 Vehicle transportation, local and statewide
 Surplus decommission
 Cleaning vehicles
 Performs basic services on vehicles, replacing wipers/bulbs etc.
 Yard organization
 Fuel vehicles and equipment
Performs basic equipment maintenance and small engine repair.
 Checks equipment for safe operation before each use.
 Changes oil, filters, and spark plugs; sharpens blades, lubricates components, replaces trimmer string as necessary
 Cleans and stores equipment after each use
 Assists in testing small pumps
 Pick up parts at local vendors as needed

Training
All necessary training required to perform the essential functions/duties is provided on the job.
In addition to on-the-job training, this position may include the following formal trainings and certifications to aid in personal & professional development:
● CPR/First Aid
● Posttraumatic Growth Training
● PTSD/TBI/Mental Health/ Suicide Awareness & Prevention
● WDVA Veteran Peer Corps Certification
● Vet Corps Annual Training (every August)
● Vet Corps Mid-year Training (every February)
● Resume/cover letter/job interviews
● All required THA, JSA DNR Specific Training
● Participate in DNR Job shadow program, up to 100 hours to be spent supporting field based operations with DNR.

Qualifications:
 This position requires the applicant to be a United States military veteran
 Must possess a valid, unrestricted state driver’s license.
 Experience and ability to safely operate equipment such as vehicles and forklifts, in addition to various hand and power tools throughout the facility.
 Ability to problem solve by choosing from established procedures and/or devising new safe work methods. Proven ability and experience in communicating clearly and courteously with supervisors, peers, working effectively in a team-oriented working environment.
 Relationship-building skills/abilities: Ability to develop positive, productive, respectful working relationships with clients and co-workers.
 Critical thinking skills and attention to detail.

Physical and Special Requirements:
 Physically able to conduct demanding field work.
 Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. alone and 170 lbs. with assistance
 May be required to travel across the state including overnight stays.
 Safety shoes, oil resistant soles and steel toes or equivalent.
