Starting a business in Washington State

This is a road map for opening a business in the state of Washington. There are eight steps in the road map but not all of them will apply to your business. We recommend you read through all steps in this road map before applying for your business license. You can download the Road Map as a PDF file if you prefer that format.

Here are the 8 steps:

  1. Research and make a plan;
  2. Register your business with the Secretary of State (SOS);
  3. License your business with the Department of Revenue (DOR);
  4. Report your new employees to the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS);
  5. Apply for a Reseller Permit with the Department of Revenue (DOR);
  6. Register as a contractor with Department of Labor & Industries (L&I);
  7. Contact your local health department for food handling requirements; and
  8. Check with your City and/or County for their requirements.

Adrian completed his BA at The Evergreen State College in 2000, his MA at Chapman University in 2003, and then his Ph.D. at the International University for Graduate Studies in 2012.  Adrian is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Washington State, a National Board of Certified Counselors Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor, and a Diplomat Clinical Mental Health Specialist (Trauma) through the American Mental Health Counselors Association.  He previously served as President and Board Member of the Washington Mental Health Counselors Association and on the Washington State Governor’s Task Force on updating counselor legislation protecting clients and professionalizing counselor standards.

Sam Schwartz Landrum is a licensed clinical social worker (LICSW) in the state of Washington. Rebecca earned a Master of Arts with an emphasis in Marriage & Family Therapy from Brandman University.  She has been designated a Mental Health Professional with a specialization in Child Mental Health by the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS).  She has been in private practice since 2019 which has involved a focus on serving those that have served and their family members.  Her main areas of focus include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, anger management, the grief process, parenting, and working with survivors of all forms of trauma including witnessing or experiencing trauma, abuse, moral injury, and traumas that occurred during military service. 

Outside of private practice, she worked as a therapist in a community-based, group practice setting for approximately four years.  This experience included being designated by DSHS as a Domestic Violence Counselor Supervisor which involved treatment of perpetrators and survivors of Domestic Violence.  During this experience, she worked collaboratively with clients that were court ordered for assessment and/or treatment, military veterans, reserve and active-duty military, and parents and children involved with the Department of Children, Youth, and Family (DCYF). 

She believes that therapy is a collaborative process and guides clients to increase self-awareness, gain new perspectives, decrease symptoms, and increase personal strengths to have a more meaningful life experience.  She works to provide clients with tailored treatment plans that can be integrated into their daily lives.  Rebecca uses an eclectic mix of evidence-based treatment modalities to meet each client's unique needs that include: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) including Trauma-Focused CBT, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness strategies, Solution-Focused Therapy, Attachment Theory, and is currently working on her certifications for Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy.
